What brand oil filters do you use?

I haven’t changed my own oil before, so I don’t know which brand is better. I’m currently looking at a K&N filter. Is that a good filter?

I just use a plain Carquest one, seems to work fine.

Just for the love of Jesus don’t get a Fram, it will collapse on itself.

Really depends on the car. The two cars in my households are a volks and volvo and therefore both use Mann or Meyle filters typically. K&N should work fine i’d wager though.

I’ve heard Fram filters have a leaking issue.

Seconding those of the “Frams are scary” club. I usually use Wix.

Leaking, collapsing in on itself internally and sending the bits up into the engine, god knows what else. They have to be the worst of the worst when it comes to oil filters. The cartridge filter in my car when I bought it was Fram and the middle was bulged out when I removed it.

I usually find out who makes the factory filter then buy their unbranded one. Here's a secret though: It's not a huge deal on a daily. Millions of people run the shittiest of shit and their cars die from other things than oil filter problems 99.99999% of the time.

Wix is generally considered a good filter, I usually don’t care and just get whatever. Bosche, FRAM, etc. Im not convinced that it will matter a lot for my truck. With a newer car and tighter tolerances maybe but for something with only 4.5 liters displacment that takes 9 quarts of oil...I think I’ll be fine.

I’ve used tons of Frams over the years and have never had an issue. No leaking, no falling apart, nothing.

I’ve also used K&N, and Purolator and haven’t had any trouble there either.

Fram is crap. K&N is pricey, but good. I usually go with one of the midrange Bosch (I think these are made by Champion in the US, as are several other brands). I also like Wix, which I can only find at O'Reilly and don't visit very often. Sometimes I go OE, which is Mann or Mahle for a lot of German cars. Prices on par with K&N, often $10-$13 per filter.

K&Ns are nice, but pricey. The nut on the bottom is cool. I run these on high performance stuff.

WIX or Napa Gold (made by WIX) are what I put on our regular cars.

You’ll hear a lot of shit about Fram, but that’s what I use. However, I use their Ultra series. I chose that filter because it performed well in independant tests (as did many other filters) but it also doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and they are available everywhere.

Their lesser quality filters performed poorly and earned their rep, but the Ultra is a quality filter. I haven’t had any issues in over 100k miles.

Wix scored well also, and I’ve heard that Napa Gold is just a re-badged Wix.

You’re going to hear a lot against Fram, and for good reason. Their cheap filters are poorly made, and this has done serious damage to their reputation. But to be fair, Fram makes multiple grades of product, and their “Ultra” filters are actually quite good.

EDIT: Quadradeuce beat me to it.

The only filters I no longer run are FRAM orange. The others are fine. I’ve run them all at one point.

I had oil pressure gauge flutter in two engines that went away after going to K&Ns from the cheap orange FRAMs. No other changes were made. That sold me.

I like to use whatever tastes best. Go into AutoZone and open up the boxes of different brands that fit your car. Lick the rubber gasket at the open end. Whatever tastes best is your filter.

Fram’s reputation may be damaged beyond repair, but I still try to defend their “Ultra” stuff when these discussions come up. Many, many , manufacturers offer different grades of product, and it’s easy to generalize. But it’s just not that simple...

From the comments, it seems I’m the only one that uses Mobil1 filters on my own car. I use Purolator PureONE on my girlfriend’s car though. It uses a cartridge filter and hard to find any other non-Fram brand filter for it.

I know you already ordered the wix, but I always use puralator gold’s.

It’s a step up from normal and has one hell of a good grip on the outside for easy removal.

I usually stick with WIX (or Napa Gold as they are manufactured by WIX) or Mobil 1 on nicer cars. Stay away from cheap stuff like Fram; I’ve actually seen oil get dirty much faster using a Fram.

If you are actually changing the filter on a honda, they are like $6 at the dealer ad have an internal check valve many aftermarket filters lack. Just go get the OEM part. I think the mobil 1 branded ones also have said valve if you find a deal on buying M1 with a filter.

I’ve never had a problem with Fram and I like the grippy stuff they spray on the end so you can just grab it to spin it off without running the risk of crushing the canister. I do always “pre-oil” the threads and rubber gasket and they have always come off with no problems. Not really sure about it’s filtering capabilities - but figure I change it often enough to prevent problems anyways... The only filter I ever had a problem with was a Nissan branded filter where the canister crushed and started to separate from the end piece while trying to get it off.

The only reason to avoid that in this instance is that Honda OEM filters are often rebranded cheap FRAMs.
